| There is simply no question that your football speed training program will have a major impact on the success of your program. When talking about the skills that define top football players at every level, most conversations begin and end by comparing the speed of the athlete. Of course, in the sport of football, the only measuring stick that classifies an athlete’s potential is the 40 yard dash. Whether or not this is a fair, or even useful, means of determining success is a subject for debate. But for the time being, the faster an athlete’s 40, the higher their stock when determining depth charts for skill positions or ranking high at the next combine. |
Despite the fact that most football speed training programs
do focus on the 40, every position on the field requires specific speed
development attention. After all, how many more games would you win if your
offensive line was just a half of a step quicker getting off the ball or
your defensive line could get penetration before the opposing offense could
get in position to block. Consider the number of first downs you would gain
or touchdowns you would score if your receivers could get one extra step
of separation when running patterns. What impact could your football speed
training program have it it resulted in our running backs and quarterbacks
developing the explosive speed to evade one extra tackle every play or if
it gave your offensive lineman the speed and agility to pull and make big
blocks opening up the gaping holes that generate big yards for your new
lightning fast backfield.
But such benefits arent strictly for your offense. Defense wins games
as well. A well designed football speed training program will give your
defensive backs the speed to stick to receivers, come up and play the run
or run down a streaking wide out. Your linebackers will adjust to running
and passing plays preventing positive yardage, cover the flats and stick
to tight ends and receivers coming across the middle. Defensive lineman
will have the agility and explosiveness to get through the line and stuff
the run and sack the quarterback.
As you can see the potential gains in speed and success that come from a
finely crafted football speed training program are almost limitless. And
when you consider that level of ability that athletes have at every level,
making speed development a foundational part of your program is essentially
a mandatory component of success. Whether you are a coach at the Pop Warner
level or coaching an perennially successful high school program, you know
that the superior athletes all have the same obvious characteristic: blistering
speed.
The fact of the matter is that speed is an element of training
that can be taught and coached. It is simply a matter of adding to or changing
your current program or system to reflect the most current football speed
training philosophies. While it is true that you cant turn every athlete
on your team into Michael Vick, every athlete in your program is currently
running considerably slower than they are capable of. Regardless of age
or experience, their speed skills are underdeveloped. By showing them proven
strategies that develop their overall athletic ability and by following
known scientific principles, you can take your team, athletes and program
to the level that represents the amount of time and effort you commit to
the sport of football each and every system.
