Lateral Resistor

Lateral Resistor

Here is a great speed training piece of equipment that is perfect for strengthen your hips.

When you run, a great deal of your power is transferred and applied through your hips. Therefore it is important to gain strength and flexibility in those muscles so that they will allow you to stabilize your body and apply force to the greatest degree possible.

Using hip strengthen exercises during the warm up to loosen up our hips, as well as strengthen those muscles will help dramatically improve performance. These exercises can be used before any workout, but you can primarily use them on conditioning days, general strength and aerobic conditioning days.

Here are some of my favorite hip strengthen exercises that are not only easy to do but will improve your speed and agility: (**Note: these exercises are performed using the Lateral Resistor – see picture below).

Monster Walk
Keep your legs wide (slightly wider than shoulder width to keep tension on the band) hips low and knees bent. Step out as far as possible, keeping tension on the band the whole time. You are walking forward in a semi-squat postion.

Backwards Monster Walk
Like the forward Monster Walk, keep your legs wide, hips low and your knees bent. Step backwards as far as you can, keeping the tension on the band at all times.

Lateral Walk
Your legs start over shoulder width apart and you start standing sideways (left leg at the starting line). Take a step out as far as you can with your left leg laterally. Then take a short step in towards your left leg, keeping the tension on the Lateral Resistor the whole time. Step out again far with your left leg, then short with the right. Repeat. After finishing one side go back with the opposite side.

Half Carioca
Start by bringing your back leg forward. While keeping the tension on the band, bring the opposite leg forward. The legs will stay slightly past hips-width apart. Now bring that back leg straight behind as far as possible. Now bring the opposite leg back, keeping the tension on the band.

Lateral Resistor
A great piece of equipment to strengthen your hips and improve your speed and agility is the Lateral Resistor.
