In today’s competitive sports environment, a knowledgeable speed coach serves as a valuable resource for any coach or athlete interested in improving sports performance.

However, individual training sessions, packages and programs can be costly, time consuming and inconvenient. On top of that, what happens when the program or sessions come to an end? How will athletes make sure that they remember the speed drills, exercises and training cues that they were taught last month or several months ago?

The important point to remember when trying to improve speed is that speed is a skill that can be taught. In order to see the greatest results, however, athletes must develop this skill using a proven system of training techniques that is designed to lay a foundation of skills that fit together like a jig saw puzzle. Like any newly acquired skill, it takes consistent practice to maximize potential.

You don’t have to be a highly trained speed coach to teach yourself, your son or daughter or your team the techniques that will make significant improvements to their speed, athletic ability and overall success. In fact, speed training isn’t that difficult of a concept as long as you follow basic principles based on a sound scientific foundation. Many people over think the elements involved and so they believe that they need someone else to show them the ropes. I’m not saying that this isn’t a good idea. But in my experience it is difficult to remember all the required information once a little bit of time and distance separate you from the actual experience.

What you actually need is a simple system that you will be able to follow, regardless of how inexperienced you or your athletes may be in following a speed training program based on sound science. With my athletes, clients and programs, I always stress the importance of the system. The reason is that a proven system will provide the most consistent and positive results because there is always a structure. When each day’s training session is not thought out in advance, or there is no clear objective based on previous training sessions (while also looking at the ultimate goal for the season) then athletes can not expect to make maximal improvements in performance.

So again, why spend large amounts of time and money searching for a speed coach when the skill required to improve most athletes are so basic and easy to understand that you can teach them yourself. Whether you are a parent who wants to give your children the edge that will help them jump up to the next level, a sports coach looking to add a new dimension to your program, an athlete who isn’t getting the coaching you require or even a speed coach looking for a resource that will add dynamic new features to your programs, you need a comprehensive resource that covers each element of speed development. That means specifically adding a structured dynamic warm up, improving flexibility and range of motion, addressing agility and coordination, improving conditioning, increasing explosive strength and power and, of course, properly implementing proven speed training techniques workout and drills. By improving each one of these training modalities, you can become a knowledgeable speed coach, regardless of your current perceived level of experience or knowledge.
